Javawind2 is an application that loads weather data from the internet onto a cellphone, smartphpne or PDA and displays the data as diagrams according to the user's configuration. The transferred data volume is very small because only the compressed raw data is loaded and then displayed as a diagram on the phone. The diagrams can be configured according to the user's preferences.
The following image shows the navigation and screens of the program. You can click on the image and will be directed to the explanation of that specific funtion or menu. The structure can vary between phone models. The menus might be arranged differently on your phone but the navigation paths are the same on each phone model.
Before we start you need to know about the terms "view", "time range" and "spotlist". These terms are extremely important for the the understanding of the program.
A "View" defines the weather parameters (windspeed, wind direction, air temperature, cloud cover, etc.) that shall be displayed on the diagram. Every parameter is displayed in a certain unit (e.g. windspeed in Beaufort, Knots or Meters/second). One view can contain a maximum of 4 weather parameters which can be displayed on the diagram. You can configure several "views".
A "time range" defines the time period for which the weather parameters should be displayed in the diagram. A "time range" has a starting date (yesterday, today, tommorrow) and an end date. If you configure a "time range" that covers the past and the future that means that the diagram will display observations (wind reports) and forecasts. You can configure several "time ranges".
A "Spotlist" defines for which locations (surfspots) data should be loaded. A location in a "spotlist" is identified by a spot name and a SpotID.
The application requires a Java enabled mobile phone, smartphone or PDA. Most modern phones with a color display and almost all PDAs support Java. Further you need to make sure that your device can establish a data connection (e.g. GPRS, HSCSD or modem).
There are two ways to install the software: Online or offline
For the online installation you need to start a data connection via GPRS, HSCSD or the internal modem. You have to browse to the following URL. The software installs automatically unless you stop the process:
http://www.windfinder.com/javawind/mid/javawind2.jad
For the offline installation you need a PC, cellphone computer software supplied by the cellphone manufacturer and a cellphone data cable OR a Bluetooth connection OR Infrared connection between your cellphone and the PC. In some cases the cellphone manual contains an explanation on how to install Java software. You then download the following two files to your computer.
http://www.windfinder.com/javawind/mid/javawind2.jad
http://www.windfinder.com/javawind/mid/javawind2.jar
In most cases you tell the cellphone computer software to install the jad file. Then the cellphone software on your computer installs the programm on your phone. If this doesn't work then try to copy the jar file onto your phone.
On most phones the software is located in a folder called "programs". When you start the software the startscreen appears. You also see this screen when you move from the setup menu to the main menu.
When you press 1 while the startscreen shows the midletID is displayed, when you press 2 the free memory of your cellphone is displayed.
The main menu has three functions:
view (e.g. wind & air temp.), choose a
time range (e.g. today), and choose a
spotlist (e.g. Canary Islands) among the views, time ranges and spotlists that have been set up before. Here you can set up and edit your "Views", your "time ranges" and "spotlists". If necessary you can enter your account ID, you can save your changes, update the list of available spots (surfspots). You can choose a language, access the Help menu and exit the program.

The diagram displays the weather data according to your settings for "Views", "Time ranges" and "Spotlists". One weather parameter (e.g. Windspeed) is displayed as a graph according to the blue vertical scale on the left, another weather parameter is displayed as a graph according to the red scale on the right, and two weather parameters can be displayed as symbols (e.g. wind direction arrows) or numbers (e.g. air temperature).
The spot name and the date are displayed above the diagram. The time scale is displayed below the diagram indicating the hours in the time range.
For advanced users the diagram offers several modes. You can switch through the modes by choosing "mode" several times.
This screen appears when you load data. Depending on your data connection this may take some time.
You reach this menu from the main menu. Here you choose the spotlist for which data should be loaded and displayed. A spotlist contains one or more surfspots. Spot lists can be added and configured in the setup menu.
You reach this menu from the main menu. Here you choose the view for which data should be loaded and displayed. A view contains up to four weather parameters (e.g. windspeed, wind direction, air temperature, cloud cover). Views can be added and configured in the setup menu.
You reach this menu from the main menu. Here you choose the time range for which data should be loaded and displayed. A time range has a start and end date. Time ranges can be added and configured in the setup menu.
In the setup menu when you choose on "Update spots" the spot names and spot IDs of all available surfspots are loaded. This function is useful since Windfinder adds new surfspots to its website from time to time. By using this function you can check if new surfspots are available. This screen appears after you have loaded the list of all available surfspots.
In the setup menu when you choose "Account" you need to enter your UserID which is provided to you when you have registered at Windfinder.com to use this program. Windfinder provides a UserID which you need to enter in order to be able to load weather data. Your UserID should be kept confidential because other people could use your UserID to access data.
In the setup menu when you press "Help" you can find brief explanations for the most important features and menus of the program. For a more detailed explanation refer to this manual.
In the setup menu when you press "Languages" you can choose between 2 or more languages. The number of supported languages is dependent on the version of the program you installed. After choosing a language the program exits. After a new start of the program the new language is activated.
You reach this menu from the Setup Menu. You can create, edit and remove views. When you select a view a context menu is shown which lets you create, edit and remove a view.
In this context menu if you press "Show" the weather parameters for this view are shown. If you select "Edit" you can change the weather parameters. "New" lets you create a new "View" and "Remove" deletes the selected view.
If you choose "Show" from the context menu the settings for the current view are shown, first the name and then the entries for two weather parameters to be displayed in the diagram graphically (curve) indicated by "D:" for diagram, and then the entries for two weather parameters to be displayed in the diagram as text or symbols indicated by "S:" for symbol.
A view is configured in 4 steps. The header tells you which step you are currently in. In each step you configure a weather parameter. In the first 2 steps you configure the weather parameters to be displayed as a curve in the diagram and in the last 2 steps you configure the weather parameters to be displayed as symbols or text in the diagram. After selecting a parameter choose OK and you will be forwarded to the next step.
You reach this menu from the setup menu. The menu shows all time ranges that have been created so far. If you navigate on a time range the context menu allows you to create, edit, and remove a time range.
If you choose "Show" in the context menu the time period for the selected time range is displayed. With "Edit" you can edit the time range, with "Remove" you can delete the time range and with "Create" you can define a new time range.
"Show" displays the name of the time range, the start date and the end date.
If you choose "Edit" from the context menu you can modify the name of the time range and define a start date and further down the end date.
You reach this menu from the setup menu. The spotlist menu lists all spotlists. If you navigate on a spot list the context menu allows you to create, edit, and remove a spot list.
If you choose "Show" in the context menu the surfspots of the selected spot list are shown. With "Edit" you can edit the spot list. Edit only allows you to enter a spotID. The spotID can only be retrieved with the search tool here on the Windfinder website. Enter the spot that you are looking for:
Once you have found the surfspot that you are looking for enter its spot ID in the "Edit spotlist" separated by a comma from the other entries.
However you can also add spots in the program directly: Choose "Add spot" from the context menu. Enter the search string for the surfspot. A list of all matches is displayed. Navigate to the entry you want and add it.
With "Remove" you can delete the spot list and with "Create" you can define a new "spot list"
"Show" displays the name of the spot list and the SpotIDs of the surfspots that belong to this spotlist.
As described above enter a part of the surfspot name or the entire surfspot name. A list of all matches is displayed: Navigate to the entry you want and add it to the selected spotlist. Spots can also be found by entering region names, e.g. if you enter "Nordsee" all spots for the North Sea are listed.
The list of search results shows the spotname and the spotID. Navigate to the spot you need and choose "add Spot" from the context menu. Repeat this process until all your surfspots have been entered.
This screen confirms that a spot from the search results has been added.
